How Do I Update Ford SYNC Software?

The first instructions apply to the following vehicle models and years:
- 2017 or newer
- 2016 model year: Edge, Escape, Explorer, F-150, Focus, Mustang.
- 2015 model year: F-150, Focus, Mustang
Instructions for Updating a Ford SYNC Software with Newer Models
- Start up your vehicle
- Connect the USB drive with downloaded software updates to the vehicle’s USB port.
- Select Menu, go to SYNC-settings, then Select OK
- Go to Install on SYNC and press OK.
- Your SYNC will then reboot which will take approximately 10-20 minutes.
- Verify your SYNC rebooted properly by pressing SYNC-Settings and SYNC Info. The latest software version should be displayed on the screen.
- Lastly, report the installation to finalize the process
Instructions for Updating a Ford SYNC Software with Older Models
- Start up your vehicle & leave it running for 5-35 minutes
- Make sure that is not in Accessory Mode and in a well-ventilated area
- Make sure Bluetooth is turned off on your phone
- Connect your USB drive with software update into vehicle’s USB port
- Press the Phone button, go to Return, then press OK.
- Go to Advanced, Press OK.
- Go to Install Application, then press OK.
- If done correctly, your SYNC will display a message, “Install Application?”, then select OK.
- Please do not remove the USB drive or turn off the vehicle until the install is complete.
- Make sure that is not in Accessory Mode and in a well-ventilated area
- Once the update is done your system will reboot which can take up to 15-20 minutes
- Once the SYNC has updated press Menu to exit installation mode. It is now safe to remove your USB drive.
- Lastly, pair your phone to the system again and verify the installation by connecting your USB drive to your computer.
How To Download Software Update To USB
- Go to the SYNC and Navigation Update page
- Enter VIN and click Check for update
- If you see a green checkmark, your SYNC is already up-to-date
- Choose the USB Drive to download the update to
